PESSTO Year2 - Final EFOSC2 Spectra reduction

Prizes of the year:

A light in the dark: SN2013ej (almost easier than a standard)

Why always me? : SN2009ip taken in May 2014

Deja-vu: whichever type Ia and its 200-300 siblings

Peek-a-boo: SN2013am nebular spectrum (absolutely cover beneath the host galaxy)

What is going on over here?: CSS121015 with the SN not in the centre, a pivot star chosen by the local sequence and labelled as star number 2 (when in the paper are labelled in alphabetical order) and the wrong configuration

Here the extremely long log.

July/Aug 2013

gr13 RMS wavelength calibration as in the paper (0.05-0.15) or even slightly better

The same is true for gr16 (0.05-0.11)

And for gr11 (0.05-0.15)

Always used a fourth polynomial order (order=5 for iraf)

tLSQ13bnx_20130814_Gr13_Free_slit1.0_56999_1.fits (and its extraction) affected by electronic noise

tLSQ13bor_20130827_Gr13_Free_slit1.0_56999_1.fits little to no detection of the SN trace

tOGLE-2013-SN-045_20130815_Gr13_Free_slit1.0_56999_1.fits little to no detection of the SN trace

tEG274_20130804_Gr13_Free_slit1.0_56999_1 has a spike in the blue

tEG274_20130815_Gr13_Free_slit1.0_56999_1.fits is not good, despite the trace was clear, the extracted spectrum has a blue depression

tEG274_20130816_Gr13_Free_slit1.0_56999_1.fits is not good, emission lines in the blue

The pipeline crashed after tEG274_20130816_Gr13_GG495_slit1.0_56999_1, possibly because of the original standard without the blocking filter.

tLTT7379_20130804_Gr13_Free_slit1.0_56999_1.fits has a spike in the red and an additional wavelength calibration of -22.9 with the night skylines

tLTT7379_20130804_Gr13_GG495_slit1.0_56999_1 same as before and an additional wavelength calibration of -40.7 with the night skylines

tLTT7379_20130828_Gr13_Free_slit1.0_56999_1.fits seems strange in the red (big absorption unusual for this standard)

tLTT7379_20130828_Gr13_GG495_slit1.0_56999_1 has a spike in the red and an additional wavelength calibration of -39.6 with the night skylines

tSN2013ej_20130815_Gr16_OG530_slit1.0_56999_1.fits is ourt of wavelength (-36.9) but had poor trace in the red part (forced to follow a straight line)

tEG274_20130815_Gr11_Free_slit1.0_56999_2.fits has problem, not the usual shape

tSN2013ew_20130826_Gr16_OG530_slit1.0_56999_1.fits no trace at the expected position (around 450 px)

2808 used standard of the day before since the only available was not good to build a reliable sensitivity curve

tvma2_20130829_Gr16_OG530_slit1.0_56999_1.fits has some problem (a broad absorption in the middle)

Sept 2013

I got a warning during PESSTOEFOSC2dSPEC:

Nov 2013

There was a standard taken with slit 5.0 without any flats or wave in the entire month.

I skipped this configuration

flat_20131130_Gr13_Free_slit1.0_100346088_57001.fits has something wrong (it is flat up to 300 px)

I have removed the product from the output of the pipeline since another, good, flat is present with the same configuration in the same night

flat_20131130_Gr13_Free_slit1.0_100346088_57001.fits has something wrong (it is flat from 500 to 800 px)

flat_20131123_Gr13_Free_slit1.0_100345901_57001 has the same problem

flat_20131123_Gr13_Free_slit1.0_100345840_57001.fits has absorptions!!

I had to remove all these files and the original flats, I also groups of 8 or 12 or even number of gr13 flats that could not be produced by our OBs, I removed all of them.

I also found a group of 98 bias in a row...again it cannot be our OB!

The wavlength lamp from the 26th onward have an higher rms (around 20) and less lines, even if I force other lines to be identified, the scatter doesn't decrease and at times the pipeline crashes.

The pipeline crashes with those wave lamp, again they are not standard OBs since there are two lamps in a row for each configuration (instead of one)

Possible problems in wave calibration with MLS131126_20131129_Gr13_Free_slit1.0_57001_1.fits

MLS131126-024708+163617_20131129_Gr13_Free_slit1.0_57001_1.fits

For unknown reasons the pipeline doesn't like EFOSC.2013-11-30T07:40:56.311.fits and I get the following error:

It does the same for

EFOSC.2013-11-30T07:40:56.311.fits (it is the same as above)

EFOSC.2013-11-30T07:13:28.367.fits

EFOSC.2013-11-30T08:07:19.329.fits

I am going to reduce those spectra in a second run.

This is the month wih the electronic noise pattern, the flat are affected and the normalised flat that has peak of 10% (instead of the usual 3-5%)

Many flats were saturated

Some flats on the 23rd and the 29th have less signal in the blue (the 23rd) or in the red (the 29th), that could be both a consequence of the electrnic noise or some odd choice of the observers. I decided to keep them since I already removed 50% or even more of the total amount of flats for the november/december run and if it is related with the noise, using normal flats could only increase the problem during the extraction

The data of the 29th of November have something strange, the wavelength scatter is higher than usual in all the configurations and the pipeline autoidentify only 5 or 6 lines (I had to entry the others manually)

tLSQ13dbn_20131123_Gr13_Free_slit1.0_57001_2.fits very noisy spectrum

tLSQ13dbn_20131123_Gr13_Free_slit1.0_57001_1.fits very noisy spectrum

23rd without standards and 25th without proper standards for slit1.5

tLSQ13cuw_20131125_Gr11_Free_slit1.0_57002_2.fits very noisy

tL745a_20131129_Gr16_OG530_slit1.0_57002_1.fits has problem in the red part (wide, red absorption)

tOGLE-2013-SN-128_20131129_Gr13_Free_slit1.0_57002_1.fits is repeated twice in the 1d (you can remove this one)

Dec 2013

EFOSC.2013-12-22T02:56:20.860.fits

EFOSC.2013-12-22T02:58:31.139.fits

were originally listed as FLAT (in the field object),

they could be the internal flats since the difference between each object looks of ~2 minutes

see the header .... (I changed with the name of the object with ccdproc???)

Several flats are satured, I removed those manually before running the pipeline

Problem with the wavelength calibration of SMTJ03054854-28503700_20131202_Gr13_Free_slit1.0_57002_1.fits (off of 24 Ang that is kind of unusual)

These files and those related of the 1dSPEC will not have the keywords of PESSTOEFOSC2dSPECTRA (they are the whole gr13+slit1.0+Free and gr13_slit1.5+GG495 comfigurations)

The keywords should be related to Gain and RON since that is what the pipeline writes at the end:

Keyword name 'ESO DET OUT1 GAIN' is greater than 8 characters or or contains spaces; a HIERARCH card will be created.

Keyword name 'ESO DET OUT1 RON' is greater than 8 characters or or contains spaces; a HIERARCH card will be created.

These three internal flats had a trace in it and sky lines. It the same problem that happened in December

LSQ14mo_20140307_Gr13_Free_slit1.0_57003_1.fits could have problems of wavelength calibration bluer than 4500 Ang due to the associated arc lamp

It looks that the Helium lamp for the wavlength calibration wasn't working properly (i checked the OB and the exptime of the two lamps are OK, since the Argon has more counts than the helium it looks like the faulty lamps was the helium ones, however the pipeline seems working fine)

Because of this the bluest line in the WAVE for gr16 is at 6500 Ang

tLSQ14abd_20140308_Gr16_OG530_slit1.0_57003_2.fits too noisy the image and the extracted spectrum as a consequence

tEG274_20140310_Gr11_Free_slit1.0_57003_1.fits pixels missing in the trace and, as a consequence, the extracted spectrum has a deep absorption (it happens before)

tEG274_20140310_Gr13_Free_slit1.0_57003_1.fits has the same problem

Apr/May 2014

Some flats were saturated

In april/May run the Helium lamp for the wavelength calibration seems even dimmer than february and March

RMS of wavelength it can increase of 0.05 with respect of those listed in the paper (30% of the time)

Because of this the bluest line visible in the WAVE for gr16 is at 6500 Ang (thatb is true until the 28th-29th of April)

The same problem affects the gr11 with sometimes no line visble before 4500 Ang, so I am avoiding to use a polynomial order higher than 4 (i.e. 5 in iraf)

From the 29th of April the Helium lamp seems working properly again.

L745a_20140420_Gr11_Free_slit1.5_57004_1.fits  has a bad wavelength calibration, to do not use.

For this I got this message:

I got the message:
