Night report 2014-02-19

General comments:

Moon was a problem for most of the night, as many PRIORITY and IMPORTANT followup targets were <30 degrees from the moon we could not observe them. Hence we did more classification than followup (there were no SOFI targets in the second half on the night when the moon was up). Two interesting classification targets - SMTJ01353283-5757506 (blue continuum) and OGLE-2014-SN-012 (slightly blue continuum).

00.40        SMTJ01353283-5757506    (classification)

                 Blue, largely featureless continuum. Some possible weak features in the blue, and a possible broad emission feature around ~7000 Ang. Lightcurve shows a slow rise of ~1 mag in at least 30 days, the object now seems to be around maximum light. No host galaxy down to r~20.5. Would suggest a higher S/N Gr#11 spectrum is taken tomorrow night.

                 Narrow Balmer lines on a blue continuum at z=0.083, abs mag ~ -17.8. Probable IIn

                 Normal Ia, +10 days, z=0.06

05.36        OGLE-2014-SN-012 (classification)

                 Spectrum was featureless, slighly blue. Possible broad emission at ~4500 Ang. But lightcurve looks quite SN-like, with 1.5 mag rise over 20 days. No host galaxy or previous detection of variability in OGLE data. Decided to return later in the night for longer spectrum to secure classifcation.

06.15        CSS140218-095739+123318 (classification)

                 Ia around maximum light (or a few days before). Best matches are to 91T-like SNe, z=0.07

06.35        OGLE-2014-SN-012 (classification)

                 Revisit to OGLE-2014-SN-012 (observed earlier) to take longer spectrum Took 2x1200s in Gr#11, but got much lower S/N than expected (and lower in the second spectrum than the first). Poor transparency or target not fully in slit? Either way, the classification is still ambiguous.

07.20        SN 2013am

                 Followup - dropped B from imaging OB due to moon. Got marginal counts in V, good data in Ri. Due to error in OB, the target name is set to "No Name".
