Arriving in Barcelona by plane

There are three airports that serve Barcelona: The Reus Airport, the Girona Costa Brava Airport, and the Prat Airport. The most important and the one we recommendyou travel to (due to its proximity to the city of Barcelona) is the Prat Airport.

Reus Airport

The Reus airport (REU) is about 120 km south-west of the city of Barcelona. To get to Barcelona from REU you can take a bus which will cost approximately 25€. Bus schedules can be found at Bus Schedule REU-Barcelona.You can also rent a car to get to Barcelona. Car rental, flight and other information concerning the Reus Airport can be found at REU.

Girona Costa Brava Airport

The Girona Costa Brava airport (GRO) is about 92 km north-east of the city of Barcelona. Several buses connect the GRO Airport with the city of Barcelona. The cost of a round trip by bus from GRO to Barcelona is approximately 25 €, and the trip lasts about 1h and 15 minutes. You can find the bus schedules here: Bus Schedule GRO-Barcelona . Other information concerning flights and transportation to and from this airport can be found at GRO.

Barcelona El Prat Airport

Finally, the Barcelona El Prat Airport (BCN) is about 18km south-east of the city of Barcelona. There are two terminals at this airport T1 and T2. Usually low-cost flights (e.g. Ryanair, EasyJet, etc.) fly in and out of T2 while other flights make use of T1. You can find general information about this airport at BCN

To get from El Prat to the city center

By bus

You can take the AEROBUS shuttle bus that runs daily from 05:30 a.m. to 01:00 a.m. from the airport to the city's main square Plaza Catalunya. Buses on this line operate every 7 to 15 minutes depending on the time of day. Bus fares are : 5.65€ for a single ticket and 9.75€ for a round trip (the return being valid from 1h to 9 days after purchase). The bus ride from the airport to Plaza Catalunya takes approximately 35 minutes.

By train

Get on the Rodalies Renfe (Commuter Trains) line R2 Norte Aeropuerto - Sant Celoni / Maçanet Massanes from the Airport stop to Barcelona-Passeig de Gràcia. The Airport stop faces T2 and is connected to this terminal by a footbridge while T1 is connected to this train stop by a bus service called the Bustransit. The train fare from the airport to the city is approximately 2 €. The train ride from the airport to Barcelona-Passeig de Gràcia is 25 to 30 minutes.

By other means of transportation

Although we highly recommend you get into the city center of Barcelona by train or by bus, it is also possible to rent a car, catch a cab or hire a private bus. The cab fare from the airport to the city is at least 20€.

How to get to the PESSTO meeting

The PESSTO meeting will be held at the IEEC (Institut d'Estudis Espacials de Catalunya) or Institute of Space Studies of Catalonia. The IEEC has its headquarters at the Nexus Building (Carrer del Gran Capità 2-4, Barcelona), which is located beside the UPC’s (Po-lythecnic University of Catalunya) North Campus in Zona Universitaria, a few blocks away from the Avda. Diagonal, one of the main avenues of access into and out of the city: Nexus Building

You can get to the Nexus building from downtown via

-METRO: Zona Universitaria (L3). You have to get off at the last stop Zona Universitaria, from Plaza Catalunya. This will take you about 17 minutes.

-BUSES: 75, 54, 60, 213, 22, 33, 7

-FGC (Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat) or short distance trains: The ferrocarril line you can take is the L6 Reina Elisenda line that goes from Plaza Catalunya to Reina Elisenda. Get off at the last stop of the line (Reina Elisenda) and then take number 68 or 22 bus to stop ID 550 or the number 75 bus to stop ID 295 and then walk to the Nexus.

-CAR/TAXI: You can drive to the Nexus if you like, but we do not recommend this option as it is complicated and expensive to park near the building. You can also catch a cab to get to the Nexus but this will be more expensive than the metro, train or bus.

If you stay at Residencia Torre Girona (see below Where to Stay), the Nexus building is 10 minutes away from the Residencia by foot.

Festivity of La Mercè.

One of the most important festivals in Barcelona is celebrated during the last days of the month of September: La Mercè. A series of concerts and other activities (most of which are free) take place throughout the city of Barcelona for approximately 5 days around the 24th of September to celebrate the Festivity of Mare de Deu de la Mercè (Patron Saint of Barcelona). You can find more information and the 2012 programme here: La Mercè 2012. You might want to have La Mercè in mind to book your accommodation for a bit longer than just for the PESSTO meeting :) .

Public TransportationThe web page of general metropolitan public transportation of Barcelona which includes buses, tram, metro and FGC is TMB.

Using the Metro: You can either buy a one-way ticket which will cost you around 2.00 Euros or buy a T-10 (1 zone) ticket which includes 10 tickets, so you can travel on any means of transport (metro, tram, ferrocarrils, or bus). This is an integrated ticket and it allows you to interchange means of transport during the next hour and 15 min (right after you pass you card through the first transport system, you can change means during the next hour and 15 min). Take into account that it cannot be the same bus, metro or tram line. Here is a map of the Barcelona metro system:
