Night Report 2014-11-23

Observers: Georgios Dimitriadis, Mathew Smith & Rob Firth

TAT: Joe Anderson, Nancy Elias-Rosa

Non-photometric night: Clear for the first half, with scattered clouds overhead for the last 2.5 hours.

23 Nov: SOFI spectroscopy and imaging with some EFOSC2 spectroscopy towards the end of the night. Full details can be found here:https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Sf032A7-zE_NPz4leFQdbeY9tzUvDCPaNuM8yoh_bNE

CALIBRATIONS:

    - 19:30UT - we have control of the telescope! No overhead clouds, but it's a little windy.

    - 19:30UT - 2x PESSTO_bias & 1x PESSTO_calib

    - 20:00UT - SOFI_FlatJHK, SOFI_specarc. There is a problem with the 1st set of flats so we abort and restart at 20:40UT (there is no time to do SOFI_flatspec).

PRE-OBSERVATIONS:

    - 23:30UT - Sunset

                    - Conditions: Clouds on the horizon, but they don't look at all terrible. No wind.

                     - We check the slit alignment - all looks good.

    - 00:00UT - SOFI SPECTROSCOPIC STANDARD: Feige 110: Seeing 0.8", Airmass 1.10 (done twice - the sky is too bright).

SCIENCE-OBSERVATIONS:

    - 00:30UT - ASASSN-14jb: Spectroscopy: Blue arm. Seeing 0.9", Airmass 1.08

    - 02:05UT - HIP118115 (telluric for ASASSN-14jb). Seeing 0.8", Airmass 1.16.

    - 02:15UT - ASASSN-14jb: JHK imaging. Seeing 0.7", Airmass 1.41

    - 02:45UT - SN2013hx: JHK imaging. Seeing 0.8", Airmass 1.17. There are some clouds on the western horizon.

    - 04:45UT - ASASSN-14ha: JHK imaging. Seeing 0.65", Airmass 1.11

    - 05:00UT - ASASSN-14ha: Spectroscopy: Blue & Red arms. Seeing 0.7", Airmass 1.13

    - 06:00UT - HIP20378 (telluric for ASASSN-14ha). Seeing 0.8", Airmass 1.10

    - 06:05UT - Switch to EFOSC. There are scattered clouds overhead.

    - 06:15UT - EFOSC SPECTROSCOPIC STANDARD: L745a: Seeing 1.0", Airmass 1.15

    - 06:50UT - OGLE-2014-SN-155: Classification with gm13 for 1500s. Seeing 1.0", Airmass 1.46

    - 07:20UT - PSNJ09204691-0803340: Followup with gm11 & gm16 for 1500s each. Seeing 0.9", Airmass 1.32

POST-OBSERVATIONS:

    - 08:20UT - EFOSC SPECTROSCOPIC STANDARD: L745a: Seeing 0.9", Airmass 1.02

    - 08:45UT - PESSO_calib (only arcs)

    - 09:00UT - Skyflats: UVi

SCIENCE-CONCLUSIONS:

    - OGLE-2014-SN-155: (Classification)        A blue featureless spectrum. Possibly a galaxy @ z=0.16?

    - PSNJ09204691-0803340 (Follow-up)       A galaxy @ z=0.02 (SNID). Visual inspection shows this to be consistent with a type IIn @ z=0.02.
