Night and daytime Calibration

Classification OBs

These OBs have the 1" slit defined. As discussed in the PESSTO Handbook, if the seeing is <=1.4 then use a 1" slit. If the seeing is >=1.5, then use 1.5" slit.

Comments from Stefano (April 2012) :

  • There is no major gain in using exposures less than 900s ,1500s for faint and very faint. Together with the overhead, one may gain 5 or 10 minutes per object. Considering that we do 50/50 classification and followup, we will not classified more than 10 object per night. Exposing less we could increase to 12, but will result in lower S/N. In April we failed, or struggled to classify about ~1 object per night due to low S/N.
  • On the other hand to improve the S/N significantly we would need to double the exposure time. Which would decreasing from 10 to 5 the classification per night. This is the wrong balance.
  • For relatively bright objects we could use shorter template (for example 300 instead of 600 or 180 instead of 300), but also in this case the gain doesn't seem worthwhile.
